Gender Affirming Care workshop: Hormone Readiness Assessment

In British Columbia, trans, nonbinary, Two-Spirit and gender expansive (TNB2S+) adults are required to complete a hormone readiness assessment before starting gender-affirming hormone therapy. While primary care providers with appropriate training can offer these assessments, many people continue to rely on counsellors and allied health professionals to access care.

This workshop is intended for clinical counsellors, social workers, nurse practitioners, and other allied health professionals with foundational experience working with TNB2S+ clients.

This workshop introduces a low-barrier, trauma-informed approach to offering hormone readiness assessments and care planning. Participants will learn a flexible, client-centred process grounded in informed consent and aligned with current standards of care. The workshop focuses on practical tools that support clinicians in providing ethical, affirming, and accessible care.

Using an anti-oppression lens, we will explore how to support clients navigating pathways to gender affirming care in BC, while recognizing how racism, ableism, fatphobia and other forms of oppression impact access to this care. We will discuss opportunities for advocacy along with practical strategies for navigating systemic barriers.

Participants will receive templates, forms, and sample assessment reports aligned with WPATH Standards of Care (Version 8). There will also be opportunities for reflection on how our own social location shapes clinical practice and wellbeing when doing this work.

By the end of the workshop, participants will feel more confident supporting TNB2S+ adults in accessing gender-affirming hormone care.

Format: Online via Zoom
